Murder on the Dancefloor

[Canberra / Law & Order] A man has been charged with Murder following a fight in Green Square, Kingston, in the early hours of Saturday morning, not that you'd know it from looking at The Canberra Times website. Surprisingly, despite the story taking up the whole front page of the Sunday Times, there was also no mention of the it over at The RiotACT when I checked earlier, nor in the Canberra-focussed USENET group Canb.General.

The word on the street is that the fight spilled out of The Holy Grail (no surprise there) and that two guys took on a kick-boxing instructor, managed to land a couple of hits, but ultimately came off second-best. One of them started complaining of chest-pains & died in hospital. The ABC reports that the charged man was to appear in the Mags Court today, so I should be able to post more details in the next few days.

UPDATE: The RiotACT now has this story, which points to another story in from the Herald-Sun. The second story mentions the court appearance as being scheduled for Tuesday, given that today is a public holiday in the ACT.

More updates & corrections in comments.

Turns out the fight was over a girl according to this Canberra Times story.

You're right; the fight spilled out of the Durham and not the Holy Grail. That source's cred just dropped a few points.

This ABC story reports

"It is alleged the two had an altercation at the Durem Arms pub early on Saturday which later spilled out into Kingston Square.

The court heard the dead man made offensive remarks about Nakis's girlfriend.

Punches were exchanged in and outside of the premises before police arrived just after midnight."

A late update - The Canberra Times reported on 15 June that the charge has been reduced to manslaughter. I'd heard that the charges had been dropped, but can't find a link to support the rumour.
