Smokey smokey nights, Paint your pictures brown & grey

Work was eerily quiet today. Those who did show left early when the smoke reduced visibility to a couple of kilometres mid-afternoon, despite the radio reporting that all fires active in the ACT were under control.

Calls were made and we were relieved to hear everyone in the team was ok. One of the directors had his house singed, but that seemed to be the worst of it. Given that Canberra has -2 degrees of separation (rather than the usual 6) everyone knew people who'd been affected. One of the people from my grad year (2000) lost her garage & car, but the house survived thankfully. She apparently stayed home today to defend the house from looters. The sad thing was that almost everyone who came in today reported that they'd seen people tossing lit cigarettes from cars on their way to work.

Apparently the smoke is keeping the temperature down, but the winds are forecast to pick up over the next few days, which'll increase the risk of any new fires spreading.

Current situation: Hot, with little breeze and grey/yellow skys. When the sun is visible, it's red.
