Farewell Highgate
It's a sad day for lovers of the good old Aussie snack bar. Another has gone the way of the Dodo.
The Highgate snack bar in Kingston closed it's doors for refurbishment about a month ago. The manager told me that they were just replacing all the cooking gear, grills & ovens.
When I walked past tonight & saw all the window coverings gone, I didn't see the familiar table by the window covered in newspapers & magazines. Gone too was the hot box full of chips, deep friend dim sims & chiko rolls. The drinks fridges were nowhere to be seen.
Where once the Highgate grilled up burgers with the lot for the tradies passing through, now stands Taste on Jardine; an overlit attempt at healthy takeaway. No chairs nor tables, only a few stools where you can peck at the HEALTHY BURGERS or HEALTHY SALADS that're scrawled on the window.
I am now without a place for recovery steak burgers, chips & bottles of juice away from the cafes and the light when the photo-sensitive hangovers strike. Can't help feeling another little piece of Australiana is dying too.

BUgger, It's such a shame. I felt the same when Barbara at Lyneham closed her doors for the last time. It was the end of an era. They're all getting yuppified like anything.
Thank gawd I live far enough out in the burbs to not have to worry about this too much. Still, it's a shame to see them going. :(
