[Canberra] During the week Academy hosted a forum on developing creative, vibrant cities as part of ICAN 2004. Last night WIN News broadcast an interview with one of the participants, Charles Landry, who suggested that Canberra could take more risks in event hosting & try to get its name on the map by putting on huge, out-there events (like The World's Biggest Dance Party) to attract people here.

So dear readers over to you. What sort of events should promoters try & get off the ground? How ambitious should Canberra get? When & where would you put it on?

I've talked to a few people about this today. The common opinion is that a really big dance event is a good place to start.

To attract a big enough crowd it'd have to be:
1. free;
2. held over a long weekend; and
3. probably at EPIC.

One suggestion was to have it overtake the UC's annual Stonefest, rename it (for marketing reasons) and expand the various genres to include Big Band/Swing/Ballroom Dancing and Latin rooms to attract the non-dance/rock-music crowd.

If it got big enough it could act as a central hub with telecasting to satellite events around the country (much like Tropfest).

... think multicultural week. I love my Canberra during that time period. If only they could have that happen, say, on a quarterly basis? I mean, similar events of course, not multicultural week four times a year :) It was good to see us have a 'fringe' festival this year though, that's a start.
