Shut the Hell Up
After a suboptimal cinema experience with Munich (some other cinema-goers, not the film, were the problem), I'm considering my options. I can't give up the cinema. I'm tired of having to ask people to be quiet more than once. There are some good suggestions here (I like the idea of spotlighting talkers with a torch) and I'm also considering a small water pistol, though that's likely to have worse consequences for me, especially if I hit an unintended target. What's worked for you?

What has worked for me? Accepting that the cinema is actually a social experience and that people sometimes being noisy is part of that. The big screen, the bad ads, the previews, the pop corn, the cup of coke bigger than Googong dam, they're all part of it and so is the odd noisy punter. Try a cinema in Egypt or India if you want to see how sedate the average Aussie movie crowd is. Just relax Deano and stop being a fuddy duddy.
What's worked for me is not going to see hugely popular movies in the first week or two of release. Most of the movies I go and see I have a pretty good run with, because the cinema's usually less than half full.
The only time I ever had a cinema incident that nearly ended in violence was three or four years ago in Sydney when a couple of teenage boys behind me wouldn't shut up and kept kicking the seats. I was seconds away from jumping up and telling them to shut the hell up or else when...the movie ended.

Sure, sometimes you have to say something but there's a big difference between that and maintaining a running dialogue which may or may not be about the film in question.
Why do so many people have the expectation that their rights take so much precedence over those of everyone around them. It's a manners thing really - plain and simple.
I'd pay extra for a system where you get your own noise cancelling headphones tuned into the soundtrack - though you would lose out in the dolby surround thing.
