Taming of the Costume Designer
or TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT LYCRA
Not long home from the Phoenix Players' Kiss Me, Kate at ANU. Em did a top job on choreography and the two gangsters - played by Garry Walbrook & Brian Daly - were good comic relief, but they're not what got the most laughs in this jazzed up tale from the Bard.
When the pin-striped suits and dressed up dolls shed their 1940s gear for the Shrew parts of the show, there was lycra - and lots of it - in all the wrong places. With Cole Porter's lyrics in one song "Dick, Dick, Dick, Dick...", I guess we shouldn't have been surprised that the costume dude/dudette put most of the guys in lyrca so tight you could tell what religion they were.
How did no one spot this during dress rehersals? A cup, a sock; these would a distraction remove. Take heed players!
