Borders & Dendy Come to Canberra

I'm gonna need a lot more self-control soon.

Meanwhile, on the Dendy cinemas, here's a piece from the latest Electric Shadows newsletter:

THE NEW DENDY CINEMAS

The manager of the new Dendy Cinemas, Adam Mara, has been appointed and has just arrived in Canberra to start the awesome task of getting the new screens operational by mid-December!

Adam Mara joined Dendy Cinemas in October 2006, and brings to this challenging new role over ten years of experience in cinema, events and operations management in both the public and private sectors. Most recently Adam has completed 4 years in the Victorian public sector with some of Melbourne's most iconic venues including the Arts Centre and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

Engaged by ACMI for 3 years, Adam worked closely with Clare Stewart (recently appointed Artistic Director of the Sydney Film Festival), to rejuvenate and expand the cinema program and operations of the state cinema. His role with ACMI also covered partnership and event management for an extensive calendar of film festivals and events ranging from Popcorn Taxi and Cinematheque, to the Festival of German Cinema, Melbourne International Animation Festival, and Little Big Shots - Australia's inaugural children's film festival.

Before joining ACMI in 2002, Adam held management roles at a number of Australia's most successful commercial cinema locations including Village Cinemas Southland and the Jam Factory. During this time he also oversaw the operations of premium concept areas such as Gold Class Cinemas and Cinema Europa.

And now a short note from Adam to our readers:

Hi Everyone!

Firstly, many thanks to Andrew for his kind words. Both Andrew and Harriet have been extremely hospitable over my first days in Canberra and I am indebted to them for their advice and help.

Taking on this role is a unique opportunity for me to be a part of the evolution of Electric Shadows and I hope that you will join in our excitement during this extraordinary transition. I look forward to writing more about our plans for the new Dendy Cinemas in the lead up to our launch in December.

I'm also very sure that I have arrived in Canberra at the right time of year and am looking forward to meeting many of you at CIFF over the next week.

In the meantime, we are now moving to our major recruitment phase for Dendy Cinemas, Canberra Centre. A cinema is nothing without the right people and we will soon be searching for the best customer service and technical staff this city has to offer. You might know someone who fits the bill? I'd encourage you to either visit www.dendy.com.au over the next few days or check out Saturday's Canberra Times recruitment information.

All the Best

Adam Mara, Dendy Cinemas

Can't wait.

There'll be no competition. ES closes Dec 13 and Dendy opens Dec 14.
