RIP Impact Records

[Music] So Impact Records has been bought & is in the process of being carved up & tranformed into a JB Hifi. Is this such a bad thing? Well, for someone who doesn't buy comics, trading cards, band merchandise or vinyl, not really. I found that I could get the DVDs and CDs I wanted cheaper elsewhere. The bigger store size gave them the ability to stock a wider variety of music though. Unless you do buy those harder-to-get things, there isn't much point heading into Civic for this weekend's closing down sale IMO. The prices of regular CDs and DVDs have only been reduced 10%. As for whether the price reductions of the other stock might justify a visit, I'd point you towards Jared re comics and Jem re vinyl (I think I saw him there last night with armfuls of it).

But wait! Does this farewell message on their website indicate that a new Impact might rise from the ashes in another place sometime?

We wish to advise our customers that the web site will be unavailable for approximately 12 months. (c'est Jem)

haha, yeah, it was probably me with those damn armfuls, loitering around for like an hour um-ing & ah-ing as to what was important to me (why'd I buy the Byrds last night?) and further regretting not buying more trivial things. I'm heading down again Monday morning... I'm sure I missed something obvious. So, say hello next time then punk!

Being a comic fanboy and t shirt collector and all it pains me that impact is closing down.

However, before complaining about larger businesses absorbing smaller ones, let's face it, impact was probably going out of business anyway. The store was most likely in so much debt that they were forced to sell to JB. Think about it, excellent location and heaps of useful assets for JB to sell.

Whilst it may be sad that a large portion of the alterna-youth impact employees will not be taken on when the JB is opened, because of the clean-cut, shirt and tie culture encompased within JB, at least they will not be in the situation where Impact falls to pieces and the staff are not only umemployed but are also left with 10 cents in the dollar.

Well that's my opinion anyway, farewell Impact.

Impact Records has been an icon for comic books fans in Canberra. Its in the central business area and caters to students from ANU.
Its a pity that a postmortem occured in its transition to JB hifi. The least they can do is have a garage sell.
I wish the staff of Impact Records all the best and they would still be part of something that has been dear all their life.

I haven't shopped at Impact for years, but it's been around for as long as I can remember. When I was young a cool (and had no mortgage, children etc) I did occasionally even shop there. It is sad to see it go the way of so many independents.

Well what can I say. Impact Records is almost gone. The neon signs have been turned off since mid last week and they along with the overhanging street signs are about to be packed off and sent to the Canberra Museum in the next few days along with various other bits of memorabilia of a 29 year run.

Someone commented that Impact Records was probably going out of business. This is not true; in fact I can assure you it’s quite the opposite.

Also there have been a few comic punters feeling quite despondent, well there is something still blowing in the wind there.

Either way check out www.space-patrol.org/impactrecords/ for a little staff low down on the hand over of Impact Records and watch out for a possible resurrection from the comic book side.

Well it's obviously i'm late to place a comment on this subject but it is worth noting that most of what has been said is crap!!!
1. Impact was doing amazingly well the store and owners were anything but in debt
2. JB for all their false advertising have a smaller range in DVD's as they do NOT import from overseas (in regards to DVD's)
3. All staff were given jobs but most whould have prefered to be castrated than work for the shittly organised lying 2 faced organisation that is JB.

Something of note JB is cheaper than Impact was and for good reason they buy much larger quantities but it is also true that they were investigated and found guilty of price fixing by fair trades!!!!!
Oh JB You've done it again.
