Hello Melbourne
[Travel] Is there anywhere nicer than Melbourne in the Spring? Down here for a conference this week and just walking around today has been really really nice (plenty of time to kill while the Hilton gets a room ready for me). It's warm, but there's a cool breeze. Melbournites: Any cool bars I must get to? Any good jazz clubs in this town?

Can't beat the 'Hairy Canary'...
Can i recommend.
e55. Downstairs at 55 Elizabeth St in the city. Nice comfy sofas, James Squire on tap, internet computers. It's dark, a little seedy and a must for canberra travellers.
Ginger, The Bar with No Name and Bambi. All on Brunwick St on the left side facing the city. Actually pretty much any establishment on Brunswick St.
Have fun down there.
I'll second all of those that are mentioned above and add the following -
The Gin Palace - down an alley off Little Collins (between Russel and Swanston)... Very smooth.
Robot - Down an alley off Flinder's lane (just west of Elizabeth). Sushi with attitude!
Ume - Half way along Gertrude street in Fitzroy. Japanese techno and food.
Revolver - Get down and dirty and have a drink in what could be a sharehouse lounge room...
Just a few suggestions... I'll rack my brain and see if I can come up with a few more.
In a little net/games place in Little Bourke St. Just had dumplings at a noodle house. Going to check out The Gin Palace.
Cheers all!
So after the dumplings and Tsingtao beer, Mils & I walked up & down the little streets looking for The Gin Palace. We gave up outside the Hairy Canary, had a drink & got talking to a couple of guys about Melbourne nightlife. One of them directed us around the corner to GP & told us that if we still couldn't find it we could come back & he would show us where it was.
Hidden down a dimly-lit alley, not really well signed, GP would have to be one of my new fave places in Melbourne, next to the Night Cat. Cosy little room with plenty of couches and chairs, table service and Diana Krall's arrangement of Peel Me a Grape; very smooth indeed.
